U.S. Business Groups Push Back Against China’s ‘Intrusive’ Cyber Rules

New cybersecurity measures proposed by the Chinese government are “intrusive,” and will effectively isolate China’s ICT firms from the global marketplace, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other business groups wrote in a letter to senior officials. The regulations initially apply to products being sold to Chinese banks, but if adopted more broadly they would force tech companies to create backdoors for the Chinese government, adopt Chinese encryption algorithms and put intellectual property at risk, the groups wrote. The business groups have asked that China postpone implementing the rules, and “grant an opportunity for discussion and dialogue.”
