San Francisco First To Adopt Mandatory Paid Family Leave

New parents must be given six weeks of fully paid leave under a new law approved in San Francisco this week. The law was passed unanimously by San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors, and goes into effect Jan. 1, 2017 for companies with more than 50 employees. Workers must have been with a company for at least 180 days to be eligible for the benefit. Only two states – New Jersey and Rhode Island – mandate paid parental leave, but neither of them instituted full pay. The policy reflects that of many major Bay Area businesses, including Google, Netflix, and Twitter.
