Russian Hackers Wanted To Get Caught, Says Security Firm

According to cybersecurity firm FireEye, which is said to have been monitoring “Kremlin- sponsored” hacking groups for years, the DNC was hacked by two Russian groups that wanted experts and policymakers “to know that Russia is behind it.” The two hacking groups have been dubbed APT 28 and APT 29, also known as Fancy Bear and Cozy Bear, and were both the subject of white papers produced by FireEye. This post by Patrick Tucker on the Nextgov blog looks at the current and what he describes as notably advanced state of the Russian hacking enterprise and includes some speculation as to why these particular groups might have wanted attribution. Not all experts agree they did, however. As Tucker writes, “One hundred percent certainty in any information attack will always be next to impossible.”
