NFL Report Finds Dolphins’ Incognito Engaged In Workplace Harassment

February 17, 2014

Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Richie Incognito engaged in a “pattern of harassment” that targeted not only fellow lineman Jonathan Martin but another teammate and an assistant trainer according to a 144-page independent report commissioned by the NFL. The report was prepared by Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison attorneys, including Ted Wells, co-chair of the Litigation Department. Martin abruptly left the team in October, and underwent counseling for emotional issues he claims were the result of constant harassment from his teammates. The report found that Martin was taunted and ridiculed almost daily, with remarks that included racist slurs and sexual taunts about his mother and sister, by Incognito and two other teammates, as well as the offensive line coach. Incognito was suspended for the final eight games of the season, and will be an unrestricted free agent in March. Martin has said he plans to return to playing football. In official statements, the NFL has not mentioned any possible punishment resulting from the findings.
