Moving? Probably Not For A Job

The number of people moving for a new job has been on steady decline since the turn of the century, according to a National Bureau of Economic Research working paper. Shifting demographics may explain the trend somewhat, as Baby Boomers reach the tail end of their careers and are less likely to move. Home ownership may also be a major contributor, as owning makes the prospect of moving more daunting. In addition, suggests Wharton School professor and Human Resource Executive writer Peter Cappelli, it may also be the result of shifting employment trends, as fewer people stay with one company throughout their careers, making the up-front costs of uprooting a family less enticing.
