Hackers Fire Up Dallas Emergency Sirens

Hackers believed to be local to the Dallas area hacked into the city’s warning system late Friday night and blasted all 156 of its emergency sirens until 1:20 a.m. Saturday morning. Officials declined to tell the New York Times the extent of the breach, citing security reasons. But city spokeswoman Sana Syed said, “We do believe it came from the Dallas area because of the proximity to our signal you need to have in order to pull it off.” Mayor Mike Rawlings called the breach “an attack on our emergency notification system,” and said it showed the need for Dallas to upgrade and safeguard the city’s technology infrastructure.
