Bad Bosses Can Make You Obese

Research suggests that dysfunctional or downright abusive work supervisors may impact employee health. Writing in the New York Times, Georgetown University’s Christine Porath argued that experiencing rudeness at work, or replaying those incidents mentally, can lead to elevated levels of glucocorticoids, which may lead to health issues from increased appetite to obesity. A study published in PLoS One in 2012 found that women with high levels of job strain were 38 percent more likely to experience a cardiovascular event over a decade. Research from Ohio State University published in Personnel Psychology suggests that retaliating in some way – even through passive aggression or ignoring criticism – makes employees feel better about their jobs.
