Corruption, Bribery Charges For Philadelphia DA

Federal authorities issued a 23-count indictment against Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams, who they say sought thousands in bribes from donors seeking help with legal problems. Investigators say Wiliams repeatedly sold his influence and, in the case of one wealthy investor, offered to intervene in a case. He accepted luxury trips abroad, a used Jaguar convertible, and a Louis Vuitton necktie and Burberry watch. Wiliams is also accused of stealing more than $20,000 from his own mother’s Social Security and pension income, intended to cover her nursing home bills. “The alleged misconduct … is brazen and wide-ranging, as is the idea that a district attorney would so cavalierly trade on elected office for financial gain,” said FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Michael Harpster. “The immense authority vested to law enforcement has to be kept in check, and that requires decision-makers and leaders with a steady ethical compass.”
