Legal AI Compliance Depends on a Strong System of Record

Rapid legal AI adoption increases the need for effective compliance and data governance. As regulations evolve and AI agents assume more responsibilities, legal teams must ensure their tools handle data appropriately, follow established rules, and maintain clear records of their actions. Legal AI compliance depends on a strong system of record that provides a foundation for managing these requirements, writes Michael Dineen of Brightflag.

Dineen reports that legal departments face growing challenges in tracking AI regulations, understanding how tools process and retain data, identifying third-party models and subprocessors, and verifying that AI activities are properly documented. These concerns become especially important as AI agents move beyond answering questions to performing tasks such as approving invoices, updating matters, and routing contracts for signature.

An enterprise legal management (ELM) platform can help address these problems by centralizing matter, spend, and law firm data. As a single source of truth, it gives AI tools access to consistent, authoritative information rather than fragmented records spread across spreadsheets, emails, and disconnected systems.

Auditability and access controls provide additional safeguards. Recording who or what performed an action, when it occurred, and what happened helps legal departments explain AI-driven decisions. Role-based permissions also restrict the information AI agents can access and the actions they can perform. Connecting AI tools through a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server keeps requests subject to these permissions, business rules, and audit logging.

A strong system of record provides a foundation for legal AI compliance and legal data governance. It can help legal departments adopt AI more confidently while maintaining oversight, security, and accountability.
