Trump’s New, More Diverse, List of Potential SCOTUS Nominees

September 27, 2016

Ten new names were added to Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump’s list of people he’d consider appointing to the U.S. Supreme Court. The difference between this list and the one put forth in May? His new list features non-white candidates. The new list includes one African-American state court judge, a Venezuelan-born federal judge, and another federal judge of South Asian descent. The only non-judge on the list is Utah Sen. Mike Lee, who promptly dismissed the potential nomination. The expanded list includes: Neil Gorsuch, a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit; Margaret A. Ryan, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces; Edward Mansfield, an Iowa Supreme Court justice; Keith Blackwell, a Georgia Supreme Court justice; Charles Canady, a Florida Supreme Court justice; Timothy Tymkovich, the chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit; Amul Thapar, a U.S. District Court judge for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Federico Moreno, a U.S. District Court judge for the Southern District of Florida; and Robert Young, the chief justice of the Michigan Supreme Court.
