The Bob Costas Case: When Missing Work Is A Good Idea

Sportscaster Bob Costas has hosted prime-time Olympics coverage every night of the games since 1988, but anyone watching the winter competition in Sochi, Russia this week may have been alarmed: Costas is sporting a visibly infected eye, and as the week went on his condition appeared to worsen. Tonight, NBC Today show host Matt Lauer will step in to replace Costas, setting an example for employers and workers across the country. The National Institutes of Health estimates that presenteeism – when employees show up to work sick – costs companies $150 billion dollars a year in lost productivity.
