Wildlife Refuge Battles Activist Over Name of Bear She Saved

An animal rights activist who copyrighted the name of a wild black bear while she raised funds to relocate it is now fighting to keep the rights from the wildlife refuge serving as the bear’s new home. After a wild bear, nicknamed Meatball, was found twice in the Glendale, Calif. area, Sarah Aujero copyrighted the nickname as well as the Twitter handle @TheGlendaleBear, as part of her effort to raise enough money to send the bear to the Lions, Tigers & Bears refuge in San Diego. But once the bear was settled in its new home, the refuge sent Aujero a cease-and-desist letter demanding she give over the rights to the bear’s name.
