Vibrator Company Settles Privacy Class-Action

Standard Innovations, the Canadian manufacturer of We-Vibe, a line of vibrators that pair with an app for remote use, has reached a $3.75 million settlement in a class action claiming the company collected data on when and how the sex toy was used. The company did not admit to any wrongdoing in the settlement. Observers have for years raised concerns that internet-connected sex toys could be vulnerable to hacking. Lawyers for the plaintiffs contend that the app collected users’ email addresses, allowing the company “to link the usage information to specific customer accounts.” Standard Innovation has agreed to stop collecting users’ email addresses and to update its privacy notice to provide more clarity on how data is collected.
