Vast New Powers For A Canada Securities Regulator

An advisory from WeirFoulds warns that the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) has initiated a major change in the way it addresses securities fraud. The OSC is the securities regulator for the province of Ontario, which includes Toronto and the Toronto Stock Exchange. Formerly the OSC was limited to taking a relatively passive role, typically sifting through evidence after the fact. Now, by way of a recently formed Joint Serious Offences Team (known as JSOT), the OSC has been empowered to obtain warrants allowing it to intercept e-mails, use hidden cameras and recording devices, and secretly enter a place of business.
