Using AI to Modernize Master Service Agreement Contract Review

Counter Contract Lifecycle Management Complexity With No-Code Tools, Governance, and AI

In a recent article, LawVu’s Shaun Plant writes that in-house legal teams need to incorporate AI to modernize Master Service Agreement contract review. Across organizations, business units have transformed through technology and data. Sales teams close deals faster, finance leaders track performance in real time, and marketing groups rely on analytics to guide strategy. Yet contract review in many legal departments remains largely manual, consuming valuable time.

The issue is that the processes and tools surrounding contract work have not evolved at the same pace as the rest of the business. Master Service Agreements (MSAs) illustrate the predicament. Unlike simple agreements, they are complex frameworks designed to govern multiple services, evolving pricing models, and future statements of work. Their broad scope requires careful contextual analysis, particularly when provisions written for one service type might unintentionally apply to another. Yet delays in review often stem less from complexity than from workflow inefficiencies.

Contract review requires technology to eliminate repetitive tasks that don’t need human judgment. In addition, an AI review process allows legal teams to ask whether a document contains conflicting provisions, either within the agreement itself or when compared against other documents in the workspace. As long-term governance documents, they require structured, playbook-driven evaluation. For many in-house teams lacking legal-specific technology, however, the review process remains largely manual. The result is a disconnected workflow that slows the process. In reality, MSAs are rarely slow because of their inherent complexity. They are slow because they are reviewed manually.

Using AI to modernize Master Service Agreement contract review ensures greater productivity and efficacy.  When structured playbooks, contextual clause comparison, and cross-document analysis are integrated directly into the legal workspace, even the most detailed third-party MSA can be assessed efficiently within minutes rather than hours.
