UK Supreme Court Prepares For Brexit Case

In an unprecedented move, all 11 members of the UK’s Supreme Court will sit for case to determine whether the government has the power to begin a transition out of the EU. In November, the High Court ruled that Parliament must vote on Article 50 – the section of the EU Lisbon Treaty covering a state’s departure from the union – before it can be triggered. The Supreme Court will hear the case in December. Public scrutiny is sure to be intense. “I think that it’s not a question of my looking forward to it but I can perfectly well understand why the public is extremely interested in” the case, said one judge, Lord Kerr of Tonaghmore. “I think that’s an entirely healthy thing. So I’m not particularly looking forward to the public interest but I’m certainly not disheartened by it.”
