Uber, Lyft Protest Fingerprint Background Checks

Uber and Lyft are threatening to end operations in Maryland unless the state grants a waiver from a fingerprint background check law passed in 2015. The ride-sharing companies may be able to get a waiver through the state’s Public Service Commission, if they can show they use a criminal background check “as comprehensive and accurate” as fingerprint-based criminal history and driving record checks. “Uber and Lyft’s whole argument really boils down to the fact they rely on being able to onboard drivers quickly,” driver and blogger Harry Campbell told Bloomberg BNA. The companies followed through on a pledge to quit service in Austin after voters rejected a waiver for fingerprint background checks there.
