Turning Crisis into Compliance Opportunity After Ethics Scandal
August 5, 2025

In a recent episode of the FCPA Compliance Report, Tom Fox of the Compliance Podcast Network spoke with Steve Vincze, founder of Trestle Compliance, to examine corporate lessons from the high-profile ethics scandal involving Astronomer. Drawing on his past experience with Boeing’s 2003 ethics crisis, Vincze laid out a structured, five-part approach for compliance professionals navigating similar turbulence.
The first priority, Vincze emphasized, is for companies to fully own the problem. Transparency, not spin, is the baseline for credibility. Leadership must also step up visibly and immediately, modeling the integrity and accountability expected across the organization. A robust ethics and compliance program should follow, one that does more than meet legal requirements. It must embed core values deeply into corporate culture and behavior.
Communication is the next critical pillar. Stakeholders must understand not just what actions are being taken, but why. Vague or inconsistent messaging will erode trust. Finally, companies must have the courage to sever ties with individuals or relationships that conflict with new ethical expectations. Short-term losses are a small price for long-term integrity.
Vincze also noted three post-crisis essentials: personal involvement by leadership, the right people in key roles, and a carefully calibrated public messaging strategy. The broader takeaway, he stressed, is that ethics scandals, while deeply damaging, can also serve as a reset. Compliance professionals who respond with clarity, transparency, and consistency can help rebuild trust and reinforce a culture of integrity. The Astronomer case is a reminder: recovery is possible, but only with unflinching commitment to doing the right thing.
