Trump’s Attorney Has Advice: Lawyer Up

The appointment of a special counsel to investigate potential ties between Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia has created a complex legal environment for the president. Trump should hire a “tough Washington lawyer,” Jay Goldberg, who represented Trump from 1990 to 2005, told the Washington Post. “He needs a good lawyer, someone who is strong, not that he would go against the lawyer’s advice, but everybody should have a lawyer who sees things through and comes up with good advice.” So far, as president, Trump has relied on government lawyers like his White House counsel. But retaining a private attorney is a priority because those lawyers could be called to testify about their private conversations with Trump. Unlike in the corporate world, conversations between the president and White House counsel are not considered privileged.
