How to Develop Effective Training Programs for Legal Ops Projects

To effectively implement a new process or technology, a legal ops project team needs to ensure that all organizational stakeholders and end users are adequately trained on how to use it. It’s important to develop engaging training programs and materials to convey the right information to employees, as Bloomberg Law writes in its Project Management for Legal Operations series.

Here are some practical tips to get started:

  1. Set Training Goals: Define clear training objectives aligned with the project’s overall direction and objectives.
  2. Analyze Challenging Areas: Identify potential areas where end users may struggle with the new product or process, and design training to address these challenges proactively while still covering basic concepts.
  3. Determine Training Priorities: Ensure that training activities align with stakeholder needs and project objectives, guiding the development of a comprehensive training plan.
  4. Select Training Activities and Create Materials: Choose appropriate training methods, such as online, video, and/or hands-on training, and develop materials tailored to the complexity level of the new product or process.
  5. Incorporate Training into the Project: Integrate training activities into the project schedule and plan or develop a standalone training plan, incorporating communication and change management.
  6. Create Measures of Effectiveness: Establish methods to measure the effectiveness of training, such as pre- and post-tests, observation, surveys and/or interviews to gather employee feedback. The data you collect will help make informed decisions and refine training efforts as needed.

If you don’t have sufficient resources on your team to develop training, work with your training department or consider an outside vendor. Effective training ensures that employees understand how to use the new product or process efficiently, leading to smoother implementation and improved organizational performance. By systematically addressing training needs and continuously evaluating the effectiveness of that training, project teams can maximize the success of their projects and enhance user satisfaction.
