Attorneys from Baker & McKenzie take a look at some major policy changes that could be in the offing under the new Administration, although they acknowledge that for the immediate future volatility and uncertainty will be the “new normal” for companies doing business internationally. “While Donald Trump has promised a number of U.S. policy changes, a great number of them would require specific action by the U.S. Congress,” they note. “Even with a majority Republican Congress, major policy issues will still require consensus for his agenda to pass.” Among the potential Trump moves they consider: designating China a currency manipulator, revisiting trade sanctions on Iran (could be “challenging to unwind,” they say, given that other parties, including the EU, China and Russia, have promised to lift sanctions), and a proposal to create an “America Desk”in the Commerce Department in order to consolidate trade policies emanating from other departments.
