Technology assisted review, or TAR, has undergone significant improvements, writes attorney Mark Noel from Catalyst Repository Systems: “TAR 2.0″ does more, and does it faster. In this post, he breaks down the process of document review into three essential categories – classification, protection and knowledge generation – and explains how technology can address each of them, and how the effectiveness and defensibility of the process can be measured by the two crucial metrics of “recall” and “precision.” The capabilities of TAR engines vary significantly, he says, and with that in mind he has included a link to a checklist of factors to be considered under various scenarios as a preliminary to selecting an appropriate TAR engine.
