TD Bank Settles For $600K In Long-Unreported Data Breach

Two unencrypted backup tapes went missing from TD Bank in 2012, a data breach that affected 260,000 people, including 90,000 in Massachusetts. The tapes, which contained names, addresses, Social Security numbers and account numbers, disappeared during a courier run between TD bank’s offices in Haverhill and Springfield, Mass. The bank didn’t notify customers of the breach for seven months The State Attorney General’s office brought suit, and recently settled for more than $300,000 in civil penalties, plus another $300,000 in fees and funding for a program to educate consumers.
