.Sucks Threatens ICANN With Defamation Suit

Tired of seeing its “.sucks” domain registry dragged through the mud – for potentially dragging major brand names through the mud – the operator of the registry is claiming it plans to sue ICANN for defamation, for a letter ICANN wrote to the FTC and the Canadian Office of Consumer Affairs. Vox Populi Registry claims that ICANN leveled baseless accusations. “[I]t would seem that ICANN is not actually concerned about cybersquatting or any other illegal activity,” Vox Populi wrote. “Rather, ICANN appears concerned that registrations on the .SUCKS registry will be used to aggregate uncomplimentary commentary about companies and products–the very purpose for the registry that Vox Populi identified in the application it submitted to ICANN, and that ICANN approved.”
