A woman in Beijing has settled a discrimination claim, walking away with an apology and 30,000 RMB, in a case that Seyfarth Shaw attorney Wan Li calls a milestone in Chinese discrimination law. There are discrimination laws are on the books in China but they are routinely ignored, with “male only” job postings, for example, not uncommon. This case is likely to change all that, and companies will need to pay attention. China may be about to see a boom in all kinds of anti-discrimination litigation, the writer says.
