Study Finds High Cost Of Troll Defense

A San Francisco-based patent risk management services company has released a study that finds for operating companies the total cost of defending against non-practicing entities in 2014 was $2.2 billion, a minor decrease from the 2013 figure. In all but the most expensive cases, the study found, legal costs represented more than half the total cost of the case. The study, which looked at thousands of NPE cases in a variety of industries, also found that litigation in technology/market segments was more expensive to resolve than others, with cases in the semiconductor industry having the highest reported mean cost.
