Staples Threatens To Fire Part-Timers Who Exceed Hours Limit

Employees of Staples say the company has been vigilant in keeping hours down, hoping to avoid an Affordable Care Act rule requiring health insurance to those working more than 30 hours. Now the company has threatened that part-time employees logging more than 25 hours per week may be written up and potentially fired. In one note to employees, a Staples manager said “associate overspending” led to $4 million in penalties last year, and violating the ACA could cost the chain up to $3,000 in penalties per worker.
