Sony Case Highlights Lack of Gov’t-Business Cybersecurity Collaboration

The continuing fallout of the massive Sony hack has shown that businesses and government have a long ways to go in collaborating for quick, effective responses to cybersecurity breaches. Though Sony and the White House were in talks about how the entertainment company should respond to its massive data breach, the subject of canceling the release of “The Interview” reportedly did not come up. Sony cancelled the film—which is about U.S. journalists recruited by the CIA to kill North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un—last week, and Obama said the company “made a mistake.” He wished “they’d have spoken to me first,” he said. The incident highlights the need for a conversation about how and to what extent the government should ally with corporations to avert and respond to cyber threats.
