Shuanghui Acquisition of Smithfield Foods Questioned In Congress

The proposed sale of Smithfield Foods to a Chinese company, Shuanghui International, is getting some back pressure from members of Congress. Senate Agriculture Committee chair Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) said the committee will hold hearings on July 10 to consider it, as well as broader questions about foreign acquisitions of U.S. companies and their possible effects on both food safety and U.S. intellectual property. Smithfield is said to be the largest pork producer and processor in the world.

Meanwhile, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) wrote a letter to Obama administration officials explaining their reservations about the deal and urging a careful review of its implications.
