Seyfarth Shaw Lays Off 40 Attorneys

National law firm Seyfarth Shaw has laid off 40 attorneys, including junior partners, associates, and senior attorneys. “[A]mid a shifting market for legal services, we have an obligation to continue managing our business as effectively as possible, while being responsive to the needs of our clients and the market at large,” Seyfarth spokesman Brian Kiefer wrote to Crain’s Chicago Business. “To meet these objectives, we have made the difficult yet necessary decision that some individuals, both lawyers and staff, will be leaving the firm.” As of last year, Seyfarth employed 847 lawyers and brought in $624 million in revenue. But, according to Crain’s, Seyfarth experienced what has plagued many law firms: a lack of work, as more is performed within corporate legal departments.
