‘Serial’ Murder Case Reopened

The murder case examined in popular long-form podcast, ‘Serial,’ has been reopened, with a Maryland judge allowing new evidence to be introduced. Baltimore City Circuit Judge Martin Welch ordered that Adnan Syed, who was given life in prison for killing Hae Min Lee, his ex-girlfriend, should be allowed to consider a 2015 affidavit from an alibi witness, and to question the reliability of cell phone evidence presented at the 2000 trial. Maryland’s attorney general had argued against reopening the case, saying the proceedings would be “inconsequential theater and not in the interest of justice.”
