Scalia: The Most Sarcastic Justice

In a finding that will come as little surprise to Court followers, a quantitative study has found that Justice Antonin Scalia is by far the most sarcastic member to sit the nation’s highest court. The “sarcasm index,” developed by University of California, Irvine, law professor Richard L. Hasen, rated Scalia a 2.78, far outpacing number two on the list, Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. (0.43). Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Sonia Sotomayor did not even register. Hasen evaluated law review articles from 1986—when Scalia joined the court—through the end of 2013.
