The tools to carry out this scam are a cheap commodity, and it’s become a plague. Using software that’s available on the internet, cyber-extortionists are said to have mounted 100,000 attacks a day in 2018, a rate four times what it was just two years ago. Law firms and law departments are particularly tempting targets, as they hold uniquely sensitive, and if they have been lax, irreplaceable data.
