Ransom Attack Hits A Case-Management Provider; Client Law Firms Feel The Pinch

One of the nation’s largest case-management firms has been targeted by a ransomware attack. The Miami Herald reports that, early in October, Coral Gables-based TrialWorks alerted customers regarding what it first characterized as a security breach caused by a Microsoft service outage, and later in an update acknowledged was a ransom attack. The company said about five percent of its customers were affected, but the attack did not affect its software and it expected most customers who lost access would regain it within a week. The Herald reports that in the wake of the breach, one Florida plaintiff firm requested and then was granted more time to file a response in a discrimination suit because, per the court filing, since October 11 “plaintiff’s counsel, as well as other TrialWorks clients, have been unable to access documents.”
