Privacy Referendum In The Pipeline In California

A trial lawyer and a former California state senator have filed a draft ballot initiative with the California attorney general’s office. It would make California’s privacy rules unique, largely prohibiting both business and government from disclosing personally identifiable information, broadly defined. There would be a presumption of harm for disclosures, and plaintiffs could sue violators. Getting the measure on the ballot will not be easy: Proponents will need to gather 807,615 signatures.
