Piracy-Fighting System Is Broken, Hollywood Producers Say

The Copyright Alert System, launched in 2013 to battle piracy of movies, music and television, is ineffective, according to a coalition of small and independent producers. The group of producers, known as the Internet Security Task Force, suggest the program – an initiative of Hollywood studios and Internet service providers – is too lenient to those consuming pirated content. The alerts send up to six notices to consumers before warning that they are subject to “mitigation measures,” such as having their service downgraded or slowed. The current system allows “people to steal six movies from us before they get an educational leaflet,” Mark Gill, president of Millennium Films, said in a statement.
