Phishing: The Punch That Explodes

One of the most pernicious forms of cyberattack shows no signs of abating. On the contrary, it just keeps getting more common and more sophisticated. (Or, as this post from cybersecurity firm FireEye puts it, there are no signs yet of over-phishing.) From the perpetrator’s point of view, it can hardly be beat. It’s cheap and it’s effective – or effective enough because, in an organization of thousands, you need only one mark to grab the bait. Moreover, for the patient criminal, it can lay the groundwork for a monumental heist that could come weeks or months after the initial breach. What can a law firm do about it? This article from Pillsbury Winthrop attorney Brian E. Finch suggests that, given the potential consequences, anti-virus and “employee training” may not be enough.
