Employees with digital subscriptions to newsletters or magazines can easily forward or print out the documents to share in the workplace, but they risk implicating the company in a copyright infringement suit by doing so. In one case, a research director at Legg Mason who shared a newsletter over many years saddled the company with more than $19 million in damages. A few best practices, including negotiating for institutional or group subscriptions, can protect employers from incurring similar penalties.
