Obama To Block New D.C. Stadium Over Objectionable Name

The plans to build a new stadium for Washington, D.C.’s National Football League team may be thwarted by the Obama administration over objections to the team’s name. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell has told D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser that the National Park Service – on whose land the city hopes to build a new stadium – would not cooperate unless the team changed its name from the Washington Redskins, which has been called racist by Native American groups. Last year, Jewell said, “Personally, I think we would never consider naming a team the ‘Blackskins’ or the ‘Brownskins’ or the ‘Whiteskins.’” The USPTO has also cancelled the team’s trademark, calling it offensive to Indians.
