Obama Chastens SCOTUS In State Of The Union Speech

In a subtle dig at one of last year’s most controversial Supreme Court decisions, President Barack Obama in his State of the Union address merely noted that the Voting Rights Act “was weakened.” He was referring to the Court’s decision finding that the formula for determining if a state needs federal oversight of its voting policies is outdated and therefore unconstitutional. He also made a brief reference to a pending case, McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission, which challenges limits on the total amount individual donors can give directly to all candidates and political parties. “It should be the power of our vote, not the size of our bank account, that drives our democracy,” he said.
