Minor Leaguers Want Fair Share of $10B MLB

Most minor league baseball players make less than the minimum wage, around $7,500 per season, with no off-season pay. One step up, a major league bench warmer earns $42,000 per month minimum. There is no minor league players’ union. A former major league pitcher, Garrett Broshuis, is talking about organizing one, but at present he’s focused on a class action lawsuit which includes several thousand minor leaguers. A trial date could be set within the next few weeks. The goal is a pay bump to full time minimum wage level. “This is a $10 billion industry that has seen just revenue grow exponentially, so they can certainly afford to pay these guys $15,000 per year,” Broshius told NPR.
