Identifying and retaining data that has business value is critical, but that same data can pose risks. Today’s General Counsel interviewed Sheila Mackay and Karla Wehbe of the technology services firm H5 on how to manage these competing realities, a task that becomes more difficult as the volume of data held by companies continues to increase. Essential elements of an information governance strategy include early identification and classification of acquired data in a way that makes clear where custodians are storing it, what value it is to the business, and how it should be classified in terms of retention policies. As the corporation’s responsibilities as data steward continue to grow, legal and compliance teams need to play a major role.
