No statistics were provided regarding cases of the headline writer’s classic, man-bites-dog, but based on a tally of emergency room visits, there were more cases of humans biting other humans in 2012 than there were cases involving rats, non-venomous reptiles or “unspecified.” Even in New York, says an article in the Washington Post, a person is ten times more likely to get bitten by another person than by a rodent. In terms of infection risk, those bites can be relatively nasty. Some other studies suggest that bar fights, frequently on weekends or holidays, account for the majority of cases.
