Lawyer Won’t Face Discipline Over Colleague’s $5.9M Firm Theft

The partner of a lawyer who made off with $5.9 million in client funds won’t be disciplined, a Florida Bar grievance committee panel determined. Some claimed Steven Samiljan should have sensed fishy business with the firm’s trust accounts as Timothy McCabe – who has been disbarred and is now serving five years in a federal prison – pilfered the funds. The grievance committee found that Samiljan had an appropriate “element of trust” that justified appointing McCabe to oversee the accounts.
