The Lawyer Who Ended An Insider Trading Prosecutor Winning Streak

The New York Times profiles Daniel M. Gitner, the Lankler, Siffert & Wohl attorney who successfully defended hedge fund trader Rengan Rajaratnam against insider trading charges in the Southern District of New York, where the U.S. attorney was riding an 85-0 winning streak. Gitner, a former federal prosecutor who refuses to cut his hair during a trial, has a reputation for meticulousness that helped him sift through the 2.5 terabytes of data associated with the Rajaratnam case. Though public sentiment continues to be decidedly negative toward Wall Street workers accused of financial crimes, Gitner told the Times that his win shows that, “Juries will truly weigh the evidence and the lack of evidence.”
