Judge Deflates Deflategate

Calling the four-game suspension levied by the NFL “fundamentally unfair,” U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman erased the four-game suspension against New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. The NFL had issued the suspension after it was discovered that the Patriots had deflated footballs, in violation with league rules. Citing “several significant legal deficiencies” in the league’s handling of the controversy, Berman wrote in his ruling that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell “may be said to have ‘dispensed his own brand of industrial justice.’” Goodell said he plans to appeal the ruling, but the league will not seek an emergency stay, thus allowing Brady to play while the appeal is ongoing.
