Jones Day Threatens Trademark Suit Against Parody Blogger

An anonymous blogger criticizing the handling of the Detroit bankruptcy has earned the ire of Jones Day, the biggest U.S. law firm, by posting the firm’s logo as part of a satirical critique of the Detroit bankruptcy. Jones Day is claiming trademark infringement against the blogger for an image on the website that features the firm’s logo, among others, under the text: “Detroit’s coup d’etat has been brought to you by.” Internet free speech advocates The Electronic Frontier Foundation came to the blogger’s aid, citing Jones Day as one of many companies that have “improperly” demanded their trademarks not be used as an element of critical commentary.
