Information Governance Can Make Data an Asset

A sound information governance program “enables the organization to leverage information as an enterprise asset,” instead of suffering it as a burden and potential liability. Failure to preserve relevant data in anticipation of litigation can result in sanctions, but over-preservation creates its own intractable problems. A good information governance program, the authors say, is one that finds the “sweet spot.” Many organizations “mistakenly view information governance and e-discovery as two distinct functions, but in reality they are two sides of the same coin. If data sets are too vast and disorganized, they may be tedious and costly to process and analyze, or could be missed during the discovery process altogether.”
