Import Of Chinese Food Products Raising Safety Concerns

Last year 4.1 billion pounds of food products entered the U.S., far beyond what could be addressed by inspections in either country. Wary consumers can peruse labels if they choose, but point of origin information is not required once food is processed. The recently announced acquisition of Smithfield Foods by a Chinese company doesn’t fit the paradigm though. The domestic operation will continue under U.S. inspections.
