How Law Firms Provide Legal Managed Services to In-House Teams
September 15, 2026
In-house legal teams are carrying increasing operational and strategic weight as regulatory demands, cross-border requirements, and business pressures grow more complex. A new model of legal managed services (LMS) addresses the increasing pressure by combining legal expertise, operational support, and AI-enabled delivery, explains Alan Angell in an article for Ashurst Perkins Coie.
Angell compares the in-house legal function to a keystone that holds a larger structure together. Legal teams provide strategic advice, oversee contracts, manage risk, and handle substantial volumes of routine work, often while trying to devote more attention to higher-value priorities. While traditional legal managed services can help with volume, Angell contends that their narrower scope and limited access to legally qualified oversight can restrict their ability to address increasingly complex demands.
Against that backdrop, Angell suggests embracing legal managed services operated by law firms as a different approach. These services combine experienced lawyers, legal transformation consultants, legal operations capabilities, and artificial intelligence (AI) to support work across a broader range of complexity. Rather than simply outsourcing tasks, the model emphasizes integration with the client’s organization, alignment with business objectives, and solutions designed around specific needs. Services can include workflow and governance improvements, knowledge transfer, technology guidance, and enhancements to templates, playbooks, procedures, reporting, and governance frameworks.
This partnership model also helps address complex, large-scale legal workloads, such as regulatory responses requiring centralized governance, standardized workflows, and improved visibility. Angell explains that multidisciplinary teams coordinate legal expertise, technology, process design, and global delivery capabilities to manage demanding portfolios.
As generative AI increasingly handles high-volume, lower-complexity work, Angell sees greater pressure on in-house teams to focus on sophisticated matters that require legal judgment and more strategic advice. Law-firm-led legal managed services can provide that deeper support while bringing an external perspective across jurisdictions and areas of law.
